Mah Jongg With Monet

Time Flies When You Are Having Fun!

Some of my favorite days living in San Francisco were centered around playing Mah Jongg with friends. Nothing is better than catching up, making future plans and enjoying some fine food and drink while playing Maj. Now that I am in the desert, I have found it is a great way to socailize when it is too hot or windy outside for other activities. Come join us!

About Mah Jongg

Mah Jongg is played in many ways around the world.

It originated in the 1800s in China and was brought to the United States in the early 1920s. It is like gin rummy but with tiles, and the American version, which I teach, is governed by the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL).

Every year, the NMJL puts out a new card that lists the winning hands for the year. Your goal, as you play, is to be the first person to match your tiles with one of the winning hands.
It takes skill, patience, adaptability, and luck to win a game and declare "Mah Jongg!".

About Monet

I have worked in TV News, Landscape Design, Loss Prevention, and at Trader Joe's. I've tended to a bar, made an international documentary, and own two incredible horses. I'm a big Firebirds fan and admittedly have a fan crush on Fuego.

So now I am turning my focus to sharing the game of Mah Jongg that I know and love with the community I love, the Coachella Valley.

For me, Mah Jongg is about the three C's: cognition, community, and culture. It keeps me on my toes and creates a space to connect with friends and my community. Often, the game is passed down and taught from generation to generation, but more and more young people are finding the passion who were never previously exposed to the game.

I learned from some very hip friends in San Francisco back in 2016, and I up my skills yearly with refreshers from my teacher and mentor, Toby Salk. There is nothing I enjoy more than having an afternoon to play Maj, sip a nice cold cocktail, and catch up with friends.

More Than Just A Game

For me, one of the most alluring features of Mah Jongg is the gorgeous tiles. The artistry, the feel, the variety! I just love it! As an owner of several vintage sets, I love sharing them with my students so they get familiar with a variety of looks and feels of the game.

There is no better way to learn the game than with friends who will be your future playmates. I provide group rates for this reason. Let’s spread the fever!
